A series of sociological dictionary booklets showing at a glance and in chronological order important historical events and who was of note in Art, Literature and Music at a given time. An introductionary essay provides an overview of the period, showing the impact historical events and philosophical thought had upon the arts, and the movements and influences within and across disciplines. The first booklet covers the period 1700-1914. Stepping Stones My book Stepping Stones developed from my desire to tackle head-on my ignorance. I have great difficulty in remembering important historical dates and have even greater difficulty in placing famous artists in their historical context ? I have no difficulty in remembering Mozart, but who at the same time was of note in literature and art, and what was happening historically? I also wanted to be able to take off my book shelve a single book that would give me the details I wanted without having to refer to a number of books. Stepping Stones is biased toward European artists, and even more biased toward British historical events and writers in English - though special note to Russian, French, and German writers. Stepping Stones is not a scholarly investigation, but an attempt to highlight influences brought about by historical and political events; philosophical thought; and the individuals who's genius made an impact on: Art, Literature and Music. It is a reference book for those who, like me, are not experts in any given field, but with the desire to further their knowledge, and need the basic stepping stones in order to achieve their aim.

You're idea is interesting, and you certainly seem to be the woman for the job.
I'd be curious to see an example of a typical page, so that I could guage...whether these are going to be books like dictionaries, with just the bare facts, or encylopedias with a bit more information, or is it more still, will you have space for some of the little stories that are often so fascinating that surround the lives of famous people from the history of our culture.
You said people could use your books as a reference material - which made me think - dictionary, but you also said they could read them.
How would they differ from things like the 'A very short introduction' range of books?
I love the name - stepping stones - I imagined being able to read them and step bit by bit back through history seeing it from all angles not just the political.
love
Jo
