The Venus Complex. Sub-Sub Genre: Crime.

My name is Barbie Wilde. My book is called 'The Venus Complex'. (70,000 words.) I used to be an actress and TV presenter. I'm probably best known as the Female Cenobite in Clive Barker's cult British horror movie, 'Hellbound: Hellraiser II'.

While working as an actress and later as a casting director, I started writing crime fiction. One day a friend of mine -- who is a dominatrix and sex therapist -- mentioned that her greatest sexual fantasy was to sleep with a serial killer. I was appalled, but I have to admit that I was also intrigued. My friend's confession set into motion a train of thought that ended up as 'The Venus Complex'.

My novel is written from the killer's point of view, and I suppose that puts it into the same genre as the brilliant and deliciously sick 'American Psycho'. However, my book is twisted in a different way. My lead character, Syracuse University Art History Professor Michael Friday, doesn't give a hoot about business cards or Whitney Houston's latest album, he just wants his love object and he wants her right now. Michael is prepared to do anything to fulfill his desire, even murder.

Michael orchestrates a sex murder spree with an art signature, just so he can get a date with the girl of his dreams -- forensic psychologist, Dr. Elene Sheppard. Dating by murder might seem an extreme thing to do, but then Michael is an extreme kind of guy. Despite his rage at the world and other dysfunctions, his love for art makes his crimes elegant and, dare I say it, even beautiful.

'The Venus Complex' explores my favorite themes: passion, anger, sex, death and -- so it isn't unrelentingly grim -- humor. I've researched aberrant behavior extensively and interviewed forensic psychologists, lawmakers and a homicide detective from the Manhattan North Police Department to give my book an intoxicating whiff of paranoia, paraphilia and authenticity.

'The Venus Complex' is a novel about a man who rises out of an abyss of frustration and fury and creates works of art out of destruction, goddesses out of dental hygienists and beauty out of death. It's also about the sickness and obsession that is LOVE.

Enter into Michael's world through the pages of his personal journal, where every diseased thought, disturbing dream, politically incorrect rant and sexually explicit murder highlights his journey from zero to psycho.

I really like the theme of the book and the name of the title - and its always good to have more books out there with the serial killers point of view and actions! (I'm not a serial killer lol)

Awesome idea, and could easily see this turning into a film :)

Hi Barbie...

Pity you had not made the leading man a Geordie, sounds like my cup of tea...LOL Best of luck with this hun and it just has to be put to screen, it would easy stand it's own against some of the films that are released these days easy.

So, keep me in mind for a part...LOL

Barbie Wilde's pitch for her book, 'The Venus Complex', is full of disturbing promise. Could this be the book that finally gives us some real insight into the elusive mind of the serial killer? I'm very intrigued by Professor Michael Friday's "elegant" and "beautiful" murders.

We seem to have had a slue of fictional serial killers in recent years -- each one trying to outdo the other with more gore and blood spattering MOs. 'The Venus Complex' appears to follow a different path -- a more original path. This sounds like a compelling read. Hope to see it in print soon!

Barbie Wilde could be the next Thomas Harris. Her book's premise is brilliantly rendered, and it is also unique - something that is starting to be rather rare in crime/thriller fiction. Barbie knows there's a new kind of fan out there, too - a fan who wants to read about the villain. I believe Hannibal Lecter's fans (and there are many) will fall in love with this new and inventively artistic killer, and then they will experience a talent like no other - the talent of Barbie Wilde.

Ms. Wilde's pitch certainly packs some sizzle. As a Jim Thompson fan, it makes me think of a more sophisticated, upscale version of his masterpiece The Killer Inside Me. If she really can take you into the guy's head she clearly has real talent. She also seems to recognize that the way to make such a journey compelling is to employ wit and self-awareness on the part of the central character. And the idea of murder as a courtship ritual is a novel twist. This definitely makes one want to open the book and read the first page --- I'm betting that Ms. Wilde's prose will make us want to keep reading.

I think this is simply one of the most extroadinary pitches I have ever seen. If there is any justice this novel will go on to become a bestseller.

Thanks so much for your deliciously twisted imagination.

I'd love to read a sample of this book. The idea is intriguing, and there's a suggestion that this transcends genre crime fiction. I'm curious to see how the author uses language, and how she takes us inside the central character's experience. Is it just lurid? or is there more here? Count me interested.

I can see why this is the top-ranked pitch (at least at the time of writing this). It's a brilliant presentation of an audacious idea. The author and the theme are perfectly matched, if this video pitch is any indication, and the title is flawless. I'll look for this in print-on-paper very soon.
